Due to current COVID restrictions our beekeeping courses are on hold for 2020/2021 - we will update this page when we are able to run courses again.

Are you interested in beekeeping?

The University of Edinburgh Apiary Project runs annual intensive beginners' beekeeping workshops for staff and students. This course is designed to teach you everything you need to know to get started with keeping bees.

Beekeeping is a fascinating, rewarding pursuit that connects you with the natural world and honey bees are important pollinators that there is currently much concern for.

The course is taught by Matthew Richardson and Mark Barnett, both Scottish Expert Beemasters and members of the Scottish Beekeepers' Association and Edinburgh and Midlothian Beekeepers' Association.

The course takes place over 3 days. Mornings will involve learning the theory of beekeeping. Afternoons will involve practical sessions at the apiary, inspecting the hives.

Course topics include:

  • The honey bee: biology & lifecycle
  • Setting up an apiary
  • Managing your own hives
  • Beekeeping equipment
  • Products of the hive
  • Bee diseases
  • Swarming

The setting up of this course was made possible thanks to a Staff Project Grant provided by Social Responsibility and Sustainability
